Snoring and Sleep Apnea

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 2:31 pm

If you snore, it could be a sign of sleep apnea. When you suffer from sleep apnea, your throat muscles and tongue collapse onto the back of your throat, block your airway, and make you stop breathing repeatedly all night. Luckily, your dentist may be able to help. A dentist can screen patients and determine if signs of sleep apnea are present. If signs are present, the dentist will direct you to your family doctor or refer you to a physician who deals with sleep apnea who will then conduct an overnight sleep study to confirm the diagnosis and severity. Based on that study, a sleep specialist will be able to tell you if a CPAP device ( a mask connected to a tube that gently blows pressurized air through your airway  to keep your throat open as you sleep) or an oral appliance will work best. That’s where your dentist comes in. For an oral appliance, you will be referred to a dentist familiar with sleep apnea. Oral appliances often work best with people who are not obese and have mild to moderate sleep apnea according to Ferguson, MD. Oral appliances also may help patients with moderate to severe sleep apnea who refuse or cannot tolerate CPAP treatment, or as a device to be used when one is traveling. If you choose to have an oral device, one can be custom made for you by your dentist to help keep your airway open when you sleep. Although the CPAP device is still the gold standard of care, studies have shown that some people prefer the oral devices and tend to use them more. New Image Dentistry does fabricate custom oral devices and will be happy to be an integral part in treating your sleep apnea needs. Call today!

Oral Cancer Awareness Month

Filed under: Oral Cancer — admin @ 2:04 am

April is oral cancer awareness month. Over 30,000 cases of some form of oral or head and neck cancer will be diagnosed in the United States in 2012 resulting in more than 8,000 deaths. Oral cancer is now the 6th most common cancer that is often detected late in development. The dental community is making a concerted effort to increase  awareness of oral cancer since public awareness of the disease remains very low. Although oral cancer has a multifaceted etiology, the major risk factors are tobacco use, especially cigarette smoking, and alcohol consumption. Tobacco use remains the single most important and preventable cause of this disease. Since early warning signs that alert health professional to presence of disease are often not visible, early detection is difficult. At New Image Dentistry, we have the latest technology in oral cancer screening with the VELscope Vx. The VELscope Vx is the most powerful tool available for assisting in the discovery of oral abnormalities. A simple 2 minute test can alert New Image Dentistry of any tissue abnormalities that may require further evaluation. For more information, go to oralcancerfoundation.org.

Total Health

Filed under: Total Health — admin @ 4:12 pm

Every year millions of people avoid going to the dentist, whether because of anxiety or another reason. That means millions of people may not be giving there smile the care it needs to remain strong and healthy.  Regular dental visits and daily brushing and flossing are important, because they help you keep bacteria and plaque from building between your teeth and gums. Bacteria and plaque are what lie behind tooth decay and gum disease, but they have also been linked to problems in the rest of the body too. So looked at from that perspective, resolving to visit your dentist twice a year and pay extra attention to your brushing and flossing isn’t about improving your smile – it’s about keeping your whole body healthy.

Tips for Easing Dental Fears

1- Talk about your feelings.
Make sure you communicate, don’t be shy! You are not the first patient who ever felt nervous or anxious. Convey your concerns and fears before a procedure or if you experience any discomfort during your visit. Talking will make your dental experience more relaxed and pleasant.
2- Ask questions.
Once a treatment plan has been developed, ask your dentist to explain the procedures in detail. Knowing what to expect before it happens can help put your mind at ease.
3-Relax.
If you are uptight or nervous prior to a procedure, talk to the dentist about ways to make the experience easier.

Be Nice to your teeth

We are rough on our teeth. How many times have you chewed on ice or played sports without wearing a mouth guard? If you also skip semi-annual dental appointments and neglect a rigid homecare regimen of brushing  and flossing, you compromise your smile even further. People damage or lose teeth everyday from injury, disease, or decay. A damaged tooth can destroy oral function and cause pain, and a missing tooth will leave a gap in your smile. Your mouth must compensate for the lack of chewing power when a tooth is missing, so the chewing force may move to another part of the mouth. This causes the remaining teeth to shift out of place and further destroys your smile.

We always suggest taking care of your teeth because preventive care can save you time, hassle and money.

Be nice to your teeth, be diligent with your oral hygiene, and visit your dentist regularly. Your teeth are hard workers, but they’re also a precious part of your body that you should care for and respect.  Your teeth will thank you for it.

Dental Implants

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 5:50 pm

Why Dental Implants?

  • Helps prevent bone loss.
  • More conservative treatment option; no grinding down of  healthy teeth.
  • Helps keep other teeth in position.
  • Natural-looking results.
  • Life-long solution.
  • Improved quality of life.

Dental Implants often provide a more advanced replacement for the missing tooth than a traditional bridge, and preserves adjacent teeth. Dental implants are small metal screws designed specifically to replace your natural tooth root. Manufactured from titanium, dental implants provide a highly biocompatible surface, encouraging bone to attach to the implant during the healing process to ensure long-term results.

Straight talk about Crooked teeth

Teeth that are not aligned properly in your mouth create what dentist call “malocclusion” (crooked teeth).

Malocclusion affects 74% of American adults. If you have malocclusion, it may effect your periodontal health, because it is difficult to remove plaque when teeth are not aligned .

Poorly aligned teeth can also create unnatural stress and pressure on the teeth and jaws. Teeth that are subject to excessive pressure can develop chipping and notches at the gum line called abfractions. Premature wear can lead to poor root support, loose teeth and eventually, tooth loss.

Straightening your teeth can make a significant difference to having a healthy mouth and keeping your teeth for life.

Call our office to schedule a personal consultation on how Invisalign (clear aligners) can work on getting you on the road to a healthy mouth.

Periodontal disease (Gum disease)

Periodontal diseases, including gingivitis and periodontitis, are serious infections that, left untreated, can lead to tooth loss. The word periodontal literally means ‘around the tooth’. Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial infection that effects the gums and bone supporting the teeth. Symptoms are often not noticeable until the disease is advanced.

Warning signs of gum disease include:

  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Persistent bad breath, loose or separating teeth
  • Gums that have pulled away from the teeth

Periodontal disease has also been linked to heart disease, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and rheumatoid arthritis. The bacteria associated with periodontal disease can travel into the blood stream and pose a threat to other parts of the body.

Here are some things you can do to prevent Periodontal disease:
Brush twice a day
Floss at least once a day
Visit your dentist routinely for a check up and a professional cleaning
